Fan-ciful Towel

There's something kind of fun about this towel. I hope you enjoy making it as much as I did!

dc = double crochet
tc = triple crochet

To begin, ch 42 (or any multiple of 10 + 2).

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in next ch. *Hdc in next 2 chs. Dc in next 3 chs. Hdc in next 2 chains. Sc in next 3 chains.* Repeat from * to * 2 more times. Hdc in next 2 chs. Dc in next 3 chs. Hdc in next 2 chs. Sc in next final 2 chs.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout). Turn. Dc in each stitch across.

Row 3: Ch 4 (counts as first tc here and throughout). Turn. Work 3 tc in first dc. *Skip 3 dc. Sc in each of next 3 dc. Skip 3 dc. Work 7 tc in next dc.* Repeat from * to * 2 more times. Skip 3 dc. Sc in each of next 3 dc. Skip 3 dc. Work 4 tc in last dc.

Repeat rows 2-5 until towel has reached the length you desire, ending on a row 2.

Thanks everybody! I will be posting again, but I haven't had the time to design anything new in a while. I've got something on the back burner, though, so stay tuned... :)

Hello,
I have a few questions.

First, the giant ball of yarn, I could not find a giant ball of that yarn. How many ounces in in that, or is it the cone?

Second is this a hand towel or a bath towel size? I am looking to make a bath towel one day, and if this is bath towel size, thank you.

If not, I am going to use your guide 10 +2 to make one. Of course this would be based on your design.

1 - I have no idea - sorry! It was a large ball, about the size of a medium watermelon.

2 - It's a hand towel.

I hope that helps!

That's a lovely pattern! I love the color you used too.

Sara,
I had so much fun making this towel in a bath size. It works up quickly and easily. Wish I had more cotton yarn to make more.

Good looking towel! It would also make a very nice gift for a bride-to-be. A set would be great to use as guest towels.

I love making towels but my fingers are old and arthritic. Cotton yarn is so hard to handle and I have to crochet so slowly. Do you have any helpful hints to make crochet with cotton a bit easier. It would be most appreciated. Thanks you for the wonderful patterns and directions.17

I am doing this pattern as a trim, in South Maid mercerized cotton thread. I love how it looks ~
'Tiny, tight and sweet in white'!
I may still put it on a terry towel.

In examining the pictures & then reading the pattern, the pictures show a fan or shell stitch, where a number of stitches are done all in the same stitch.

The pattern instructs crocheting one stitch per previous row's stitch, & it comes out in a wave pattern, rather than a fan/shell.

Is it just me?

It is a shell pattern. See row 3: "work 7 tc in next sc" that's the shell part. The first and last row are what makes it square.
